Special Student Services

Resource

SCS serves students with mild learning problems or disabilities who have been formally identified, either by medical personnel or by psychological and educational professionals. Excluded from this program are students with mental retardation, autism, deafness, blindness and behavioral disorders, as well as developmental speech and language disorders.

To qualify for services, the Principal and the Director of Special Student Services review the student's I.E.P., the psychological and educational reports, and any other special education information that can be provided to determine if the same services (noted on the I.E.P.) can be provided at SCS. The Resource program can provide limited special education services to documented students of need in a pull-out, resource setting in the elementary grades and in a coaching setting for middle and high school grades. Modifications and accommodations will also be implemented to ensure the student’s success in the classroom under the supervision of the special education staff.

Enrichment

SCS meets the needs of gifted children by providing an enrichment program. This consists of an Advanced Classroom Services program for grades Pre-K through 2nd where students are admitted by classroom teacher recommendation, as well as Enrichment Classes for students in grades 3 – 5 where students are invited if they meet specified criteria based upon standardized test scores, academic achievement, and teacher recommendation. These are all weekly pull-out programs and is very similar to the public school version of the “tag” program. In addition, SCS is involved in many enrichment events such as Spelling Bees, Speech Meets, Math Olympics, Creative Writing Festivals, and we also have an “It’s Academic” team.
